They went for different reasons, one to fight with the British Army on the Somme and the other to engage in dangerous aid work on the Western Front. The outcome for each was very different. At this time the United States and France regarded each other with respect and friendliness and from 1914 money, equipment and people poured into France from America.

The American Ambulance of Paris, the highly respected American military hospital staffed by Americans and French quickly became a vital part of the aid programmes. As did the many donated ambulances and their, often, Ivy League drivers. Young women left their drawing rooms to care for the wounded in conditions they could not have imagined.

Ordinary people showed courage and self-sacrifice in numbers scarcely seen before in European history.
